Speaker: Gavin Peacock

The nature of Christ's leadership is founded in His humility. This is especially shown in His servant relationship with His disciples. Christ is the Friend who never lets us down. Heaven was His destiny and it will be ours too if we put our trust in Him. Jesus took the posture of a humble servant in washing the disciples' feet. God is not served by human hands as if He needed anything. We are reminded that Christ emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant - a serving ministry which became a saving one. Washing the disciples' feet was also a picture of salvation and exaltation. Peter's protest was prideful resistance to what Christ was doing for if we don't receive Christ's cleansing, we have no part in Him. By engaging with Jesus, only His blood cleanses - this is justification. Nevertheless, we need ongoing washing - sanctification. After washing their feet, Christ resumed His place as Lord. Christ's example gives us a pattern to follow - 'you also ought to wash one another's feet'. Believers are called to be humble servants - true greatness is defined by service and not status, contrary to prevailing worldviews. We are reminded that true cleansing only comes through Christ who enables us in serving Him.
