Speaker: Gavin Peacock

The book of James was written to scattered churches facing problems of all kinds. James is particularly concerned with testing our faith, being not only hearers of the Word but doers. We are reminded of the importance of maturing in our Christian faith, exhibited in our lives by the way that we live. This means we are to count it all joy when we fall into various trials - a theology of suffering is vital to our survival and progress in the Christian life. We are to recognise that trials are ultimately ordained by God as loving discipline, bringing fruit to those who are trained by it. As believers encounter trials, they are able to comfort others who are undergoing them. The testing of faith brings steadfastness. We are to trust in God's purpose, even though we do not know the reason for our trials and trust in His promises. Trials toughen faith and tenderise the heart, enabling us to show Christ-like love and mercy toward others, as well as the reality of our Christian lives.
