Speaker: Gavin Peacock

Obedience matures the Christian. Although Abraham was saved through faith alone, he demonstrated it by obedience to God in his life. We all stumble and will have to give account for every careless word. The tongue has great power in relation to its size, so it is important we use the right words to one another, bear a faithful witness and praise to God. With our tongues, we proclaim the words of eternal life, but we should also remember that every kind of evil finds its outlet in the untamed tongue. The danger of the tongue is conquered by the power of the gospel. The tongue also measures the progress of our maturity - angry, mocking words are a sign of immaturity. As children of God, we should not speak as children of the devil. The tongue is tamed through repentance, realising who we are as Christians and asking God for wisdom - we are to be slow to speak and humbly receive God's word. Our tongues should reflect that we are new creations in Christ, speaking with His accent.
