Jesus' kind and generous offer, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink' - the water Christ gives is eternal, such that all who drink will never thirst again. To the Jews, this would have been a reminder of God's provision for Israel during their time in the wilderness and pointed to the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on those who come to Christ in faith. This water quenches a soul thirst and is available to all who come and drink - a thirsty soul longs for such and we need to recognise our spiritual thirst. Whoever drinks of the Water of Life will never thirst again - there is new and eternal life in Christ, sin is forgiven and our guilt removed. This water overflows in the fruits of the Holy Spirit that others may see and He is the Comforter and One who convicts of sin. We receive the Holy Spirit because of Christ's death and glorification and it is through the Holy Spirit hat Christ lives in us now, helping us to walk with Him and making us more like Him. That we all might know this new birth in Christ.
