The Jewish Passover pointed to the greater Passover brought about by Christ on the cross - such great love for His people that 'He loved them to the end'. Love is the theme of the cross - 'He loved me and gave Himself for me'. This is our comfort in tribulation that Christ loves us. The hour of His sovereign love is that appointed by the Father - Christ knew that His days and suffering were in the Father's hands and that all things were appointed to serve the hour of His death. We are to remember that our times are also in His hands, giving us boldness to live and witness for Him. This was also the hour of His choosing love - Christ laying down His life for the sheep who were chosen in Him before the foundation of the world. We did not choose Him, but He chose us - knowing we are chosen gives us purpose. Even the 'weakest' of Christians is called to bear fruit for Christ and we are to encourage one another in this. The hour of His costly love is when He paid the ultimate price on the cross - our sin was charged to His account; He who knew no sin was made sin for us. We are to glorify God, even in the costliest days, remembering how much we have benefitted from His love. Christ's desire is that we might at last be with Him where He is, at home in heaven.
