Speaker: Gavin Peacock

Whereas Christ gave bread to feed five thousand, we are reminded that He is Himself the Bread for eternal life. As the first of the 'I am...' sayings of Jesus, this is a reminder of Who Christ is - the 'I AM' who revealed Himself to Moses, the LORD, Jehovah, self-existent, inexhaustible energy and unchanging One. Christ is God who has come to us in the flesh to reveal Himself to men. He is God's provision for eternal life, but a stumbling block for those who will not believe. He is the Saviour of those who come to Him by faith, in conviction of sin, receiving Him as Lord and believing in His name - not by works. It is the work of God to make men believe and Christ is the True Bread from heaven who gives life that lasts forever. Whoever comes to Christ will never hunger or thirst again. Yet there are many who will not believe, even though the gift is freely offered. Those who reject Christ will remain lost and under judgment. God's giving precedes people coming to Him so that whoever comes to Him will never be cast out and we are wholly and eternally secure in Him. The gift of eternal life is costly, but that cost is paid by Christ's sacrifice on the cross. We need to come to Christ when He calls us and those who have been ransomed through His sacrifice need to be brought into the Kingdom.
