Speaker: Gavin Peacock

The helplessness of the human condition is typified by the infirm man that Jesus encountered at the Pool of Bethesda - he was unable to help himself. Mankind is disabled by sin which makes the need of salvation essential. Jesus chose to set His grace and compassion upon this one man out of all those gathered there. Our own needs are often paralysing - the multitude did not look to Christ, but preferred their own way, waiting for the waters to be stirred up. Christ asked him if he wanted to be healed, but he did not look to Christ, rather blaming others for not helping him. Jesus' question needs to be faced by all, for only He can make us whole. Jesus' concern after He had healed the man was that he should not continue in sin, reminding us that suffering and disability may be a result of sin. The healed man did not appear to experience spiritual healing. The supreme grace of God is eternal life. Many of those looking on opposed Jesus healing the man on the Sabbath - they showed no grace or compassion, preferring process above people. Christ, however, suffered once for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous and we need to put our trust in Him.
