Speaker: Gavin Peacock

Christ's miracles point to Him as Lord and Saviour and remind us that God is sovereign over suffering. In the case of the man born blind, he gained his sight whilst the Pharisees remained blind. In the questioning of the beggar, the Pharisees hardened in their opposition to Jesus, but he softened in his attitude to Christ. When Jesus sought him out later, the beggar proclaimed his belief in Christ and worshipped Him. We see that belief doesn't always happen immediately, but always ends in worship. The Pharisees believed much, but remained outside of Christ. For those who are 'not far from Christ', they remain outside unless they put their trust in Him. The man healed was put outside the synagogue, reminding us that believers will be persecuted because darkness hates the light that exposes it - we should not be surprised at opposition. We are also reminded that persistent unbelief hardens - Christ gives light to those who come to Him, whilst those who believe they have the light are hardened and rejected by God. Beware of the spirit of the Pharisees! Christ takes those who are labouring under sin to bring the healing and rest that is pictured in the Sabbath. Grace is the medicine that puts to death the spirit of the Pharisees.
