Speaker: Gavin Peacock

The problem with the world is not just physical hunger, but spiritual hunger. Whilst satisfying the physical hunger of the multitudes, Jesus pointed to Himself as the One to satisfy spiritual hunger. The feeding of the five thousand was one of the sign miracles given that men might believe and have life in His name. Jesus is the Bread who satisfies hungry hearts which is more important than the bread which gives physical life. The glory of the Son of God is that He meets people with deep compassion - large crowds followed Him because they had heard of and seen previous miracles although they did not understand. Jesus tested the disciples to see if they understood with the eye of faith, to make them understand that He would supply all their needs. Jesus displayed His power in the breaking and distribution of the bread and fish. - His generous and precise provision meant that there was enough left over to provide for the needs of the people. Although Jesus is the Bread to satisfy hungry hearts, the people only saw Christ as a king and not as Saviour. Our hunger should be for the Saviour Himself and forgiveness of sin, not His provision. In breaking is blessing and in dying is eternal life - that we might live wholly for Him.
