The gospel is the Good News of what God has done to save sinners, which man is unable to do. Nicodemus knew the Old Testament well, but was warned by Christ that he did not believe. He knew the content of faith and that it was true, but did not have a personal trust in God. Christ was lifted up on the Cross to save men from God's wrath - evidence of God's love. We are reminded that God's love gives God's life - this love is eternal and unmerited, not of ourselves. We receive this love as eternal life through believing in Christ. Forgiveness is bought by Christ's death and our guilt is removed. Those who do not believe will be condemned to hell. There is an urgent need to come to the light - Christ is the Light of the world, who removes our darkness, as He did for Nicodemus. Whoever believes will not perish.
