Speaker: Gavin Peacock

The signs recorded in the Gospel of John were intended to glorify Jesus and to bring about belief in Him. Two aspects of Jesus' glory are recorded here. In the temple at Jerusalem, Christ drove out the money lenders and traders because they were an affront to the Holy God of Israel. Christ had a passion for the Father's glory and showed righteous anger. His motive was not man-centred but God-centred - if we are outraged, it should be out of concern for the glory of God. Jesus was meek, but not weak - He showed holy humility and holy anger at formal 'godliness' being used for personal gain. We are to beware of religious hypocrisy with hearts far from God. Many of the Jews showed no sense of offence at sin or the need for repentance when Jesus spoke about His own death and resurrection - He is the new temple, the One we go to to meet with God and there is no other way to be saved. We are reminded that judgment begins with the visible church of God, so we need to examine ourselves and drive out all false worship. The right way to worship God is in Spirit and in Truth. As we trust in Him, Christ will overcome our unbelief and open our understanding.
