The Gospel is the ultimate display of the glory of God and marriage is a picture of the divine drama of the Gospel in real life. The task of the Church is the proclamation of the Gospel, 'the power of God to salvation'. Marriage has Gospel power - the unconditional love for one another is a picture of Christ's love for the Church. We are to remember the importance of displaying the Gospel and the glory of God in marriage. The roles of Christ and the Church cannot be reversed - as Christ is the Head of the Church, so the husband is the head in marriage. Submission of the wife to her husband is not just an external agreement, but comes out of respect, reflecting the relationship between Christ and the Church. So also, husbands are to love their wives - headship should be sacrificial, loving, providing and protecting. He should nourish and cherish his wife, not just physically but spiritually, with understanding. Satan hates marriage, but his opposition is no match for the armour of God.
