Man was created in the image of God and given the task of tending and guarding the garden of Eden, with the woman as his helper. Adam failed to be watchful, allowing the serpent to slip in. The devil sought to bring enmity between God and man through his lies and deceit. The very doctrine of the Atonement depends on the reality of this event. The devil sought to usurp God's order and design - 'did God really say..?' By tempting the woman first, he opposed God's image design with man as the head. The centre of sin is to bring doubt on God's goodness and trustworthiness. The truth was, however, that Adam and Eve were more in God's image before they took the fruit than after believing the devil's lie. Adam and Eve's disobedience led to disintegration as they failed to take responsibility for their guilt. In the midst of rebellion, the promise of the Messiah who would crush Satan. Jesus is the Last Adam, fully human and fully God who destroys the powers of the devil at the cost of His sacrifice on the cross - He is the One who alone saves us - we need to trust in Him. That we might worship Him as Lord.
