Introduction: We continue today with our consideration of the spiritual blessings that every Christian possesses in Christ in heavenly places. These are summarily asserted in Ephesians 1:3 and from verses 4-14 Paul outlines what these blessings are. To consider these eternal blessings in Christ is to consider our joy as believers. I am reminded of C.S. Lewis, who in a sermon entitled, “Weight of Glory,” said that the problem with us Christians is that we don’t realize how much joy God gives and how sin gives no joy. Lewis said, “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are too easily pleased.” Today we come to verse 5, a statement about the predestined will and plan of God brought about in salvation so that sinners through faith in Christ are made adopted children of God.
