Abstract: Abram has had a promise from God and is uncertain of its validity. God reminds him of the promise and Abram is puzzled by it, but God says that He is at work to fulfil these promises. Later God changes Abram to Abraham, father of many nations. Abram is concerned about this so God says he will make a covenant with him that He will do what He says He will. The sacrificed animals would bleed onto a path that the two involved in the covenant would walk the blood path. Those walking the path are believing that if they do not fulfil the covenant they will forfeit their life. The deep sleep was probably from God to allow God to speak to him in the sleep and He tells him what is to come, which is that his people will been  enslaved and freed. So God will fulfil both parts of the covenant, which is why Christ had to die.
