Commandment 7 Adultery

• Sep 1, 2019

Speaker: Matthew Cox

Ten Commandments teach us how to love. Adultery is a sensitive subject but this is God's word and we need to hear it. Definition of adultery: sexual relations between someone who is married and someone who is not their spouse. God's big concern is with marriage. 1. Marriage. God's gift. Teaches us about himself. God is married to the Church, his bride. Human marriages, working as they should, model the gospel. Marriage is important to God because it's a gospel issue. 2. Adultery. Breaks the model. Implies that we think it doesn't matter if God cheats on us. IT DOES MATTER! Consequences are very wide. This is why the Devil is so keen to attack marriage - to damage this picture of the gospel. 3. New Testament teaching. Prohibits all sexual activity that devalues marriage. 'Sexual immorality' can be applied widely, to fornication, rape (God is not an abuser) homosexual relationships, lustful looks, heart-adultery. 4. The Gospel. i) Condemnation, no innocence in this area. ii) Forgiveness, Jesus, who never sinned sexually, received God's anger and was punished for adultery - in our place. Jesus's purity becomes ours in place of our impurity. iii) Change. Following the receipt of forgiveness. God's law which formerly condemned, now instructs. Fill your heart and life with Jesus. Psalm 37:4.
