The Book of Malachi (Is God Unjust: "Behold He Shall Come")

• May 19, 2021

Speaker: Jonathan VandenHurk

"Is God Unjust: “Behold He Shall Come!” We come tonight to Malachi and God’s fourth message of confrontation of Israel’s rebellion. In the last verse of chapter 2, the Israelites had accused God of neglect, saying, “Where is the God of judgment?” They see injustice and corruption and God seems to do nothing. In chapter 3, God responds by saying He will send two messengers. One will prepare the people for God’s personal coming/return in the Day of the Lord in the person of “The Messenger of the Covenant.” He will come like fire to purify His people and remove idolatry, immorality, and injustice, so that only the faithful remnant is left among His people. But God turns it around and asks them a question, “But who may abide the day of his coming, and who shall stand when he appeareth?” Not one of us could stand there in that day if it were not for the Lord’s purifying work. But He can and will purify the sons of Levi and you if you will receive it! Tonight we are singing “Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending,” “He the Pearly Gates will Open,” and “O To Be Like Thee!” and will even listen to a rendition of Handel’s “He Shall Purify.”" Malachi 3:1-5 Revelation 1:7
