Jesus' Encounter with a Centurion with a Sick Servant
Speaker: Kenny Burns
From the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry, His words and actions as He encountered various people were designed to cause them to wonder—and sometimes want to know—who He really was. I draw that conclusion because near the end of his early ministry which took place primarily in Galilee and is often referred to as His ‘Galilean Ministry,’ He asked His disciples two questions both of which were designed to focus their attention on the question, ‘Who is this man?’
The two questions were recorded by Luke when he wrote, “Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, ‘Who do the crowds say I am?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; other say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.’ ‘But what about you?’ he asked, ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘The Christ of God.’” (Luke 9:18-20, NIV). Jesus still wants people to ponder that question today. For that reason, God motivated Luke and the other three authors of the Gospels to record the encounters of Jesus with various people during His ministry in Galilee. Today’s sermon will examine Jesus’ Encounter with ‘A Centurion with a Sick Servant.’
