The God Who Speaks - Part 2

• May 2, 2021

Speaker: Kenny Burns

Last week we learned that the author of the Book of Hebrews clearly stated that the God of the Bible is ‘The God Who Speaks.’ He wrote, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2a, NIV). He is indeed ‘The God who Speaks!’ The mistake we may tend to make is to think that this ‘God Who Speaks’ does so in only a few limited ways. Granted, there are a few primary ways by which God has spoken throughout history. For example, during the days of The Old Testament He primarily spoke through ‘the prophets.’ The author of Hebrews wrote, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1a, NIV). During the days of the New Testament…the days in which we live…God primarily speaks “by His Son.” The author of Hebrews wrote, “In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:2a, NIV). God has spoken to us “by his Son,” through sending Him into the world to be the exact likeness of His Father. Then after Jesus left this world and ascended to heaven, God inspired men to write a record of what Jesus said and did while He was here. We call that record ‘The New Testament.’ Thus, “He has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:2a, NIV). Today, if you want to hear from ‘The God Who Speaks,’ the primary way to do so is to “study” His Word! That is precisely why Paul wrote to his young disciple, Timothy, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15, KJV). However, God has spoken in other ways to His people throughout history in addition to ‘prophets,’ ‘his Son,’ and ‘the word of truth.’ The author of Hebrews referred to this fact when he wrote, “God spoke…at many times and in various ways” (Hebrews 1:1b…1d, NIV). So let’s examine a few more examples of the ‘various ways’ by which God has spoken to His people!
