Let me remind you that during last week’s sermon we firmly established the fact from Scripture that the ONE GOD of the Bible has introduced Himself to mankind in three distinct forms—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Matthew wrote, “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you’” (Matthew 28:18-20a, NIV). We noticed that Peter referred to the Holy Spirit as one of these three forms by which God has revealed Himself to mankind. Luke wrote, “Peter said, ‘Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…You have not lied just to human beings but to God” (Acts 5:3a…4b, NIV). When Ananias ‘lied to the Holy Spirit,’ he had ‘lied…to God.’ Then we learned that three primary things the Holy Spirit does are: Convince the World of Its Sin; Convince the World of God’s Righteousness; and Convince the World of the Coming Judgment. Jesus said, “It is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate [a reference to the Holy Spirit] won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict [convince] the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment” (John 16:7b-8, NLT).
