The God Who Spoke By His Son
Speaker: Kenny Burns
The Bible is the story of how God has progressively revealed Himself to mankind. He has done so by speaking to mankind in a variety of ways. That’s what the author of the Book of Hebrews was referring to when he wrote, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,” (Hebrews 1:1, NIV). Our God is the God who spoke. He spoke ‘at many times and in various ways.’
During the earliest generations of human history, a time period often referred as ‘The Age of the Patriarchs,’ God spoke to specially selected men directly, in an audible voice, to begin the process of progressively revealing Himself to mankind.
As God continued His progressive revelation of Himself to mankind, during the ‘Age of the Old Testament,’ He began to reveal Himself to specially chosen men called ‘prophets’ who then shared with the Israeli people what God had revealed to them. The author of the Book of Hebrews explained this method by which God revealed Himself to mankind during the ‘Age of the Old Testament,’ when he wrote, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets…” (Hebrews 1:1a, NIV). Peter confirmed this statement by the author of the Book of Hebrews when he wrote, “…those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.” (II Peter 1:21b, NLT).
God continued His progressive revelation of Himself to mankind during the first century by speaking to the Israeli nation through His Son. The author of Hebrews described this phase of God’s self-revelation to mankind when he wrote, “…in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” (Hebrews 1:2a, NIV). As we will see in this lesson, when Jesus spoke, God was speaking!
