How to be a Godly Mother in an Ungodly World

Speaker: Kenny Burns

Our culture has embraced as its highest priority the pursuit of personal happiness. The vast majority of people do whatever they think will make them happy; however, because their thoughts are not based on God’s Word, they are misguided. Unfortunately, the things they think will bring happiness bring heartache, depression, despair, and even death! King David described such people when he wrote, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12, NIV). While our culture spins out of control and we are witnessing the breakdown of the traditional family, the Bible elevates the place of family in human society and emphasizes the vital role women play in the family structure. Motherhood is described as a valuable ministry—one that will prevent non-believers from questioning and speaking against the authenticity of God’s Word. Paul wrote to Titus, “…teach the older women…to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children…so that no one will malign the word of God.” (Titus 2:3a…3c-4…5b, NIV). Titus had been sent by Paul to minister to the churches on the island of Crete. After his arrival on the island, Paul sent Titus a letter in which he described the people in that culture as being dishonest, violent, lazy, and self-indulgent. He wrote, “One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: ‘Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.’ This saying is true…” (Titus 1:12-13a, NIV). Titus was ministering to churches that existed in a very ungodly culture, much like the culture that we live in today. In his letter to Titus, Paul instructed him, “…teach the older women…to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children” (Titus 2:3a…3c-4, NIV). The older women were to “teach what is good” by urging young wives and mothers to “love their husbands and children.” It becomes clear in this verse that loving your “husbands and children” forms one inseparable unit. You can’t love your husband without loving your children; and you can’t love your children without loving your husband! Paul then wrote an outline of what it means for “younger women to love their husbands and children.” He wrote, “to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands…” (Titus 2:5a, NIV). In short, this is Paul’s outline on “How to Be a Godly Mother in an Ungodly World.” This is ancient advice with contemporary power!
