Raising Healthy Kids in a Sick World - Child Discipline

Speaker: Kenny Burns

Even the most casual student of Scripture is aware that from God’s perspective the discipline of children is essential. He inspired Solomon to write such statements as: • “Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise you will ruin their lives” (Proverbs 19:18, NLT). • “Folly [foolishness] is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away” (Proverbs 22:15, NIV). • “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die. Punish them with the rod and save them from death” (Proverbs 23:13-14, NIV). The Biblical goal of child discipline is to gradually transform our children into adults who are able to function according to God’s design for their lives independently of their parents’ authority, yet totally submitted to God’s authority. In other words, the system of discipline we set up in our homes should prepare our children for a godly life outside our homes. Failure to “discipline” a child sows the seeds of trouble, not only for the child, but also for the parents. King Solomon wrote, “A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother” (Proverbs 29:15, NIV). In fact, proper “discipline” of a child is an indication authentic parental “love.” God inspired Solomon to write, “Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them” (Proverbs 13:24, NLT). Don’t tell me that you love your children if you don’t discipline them, because God says you don’t love them. In fact He says you hate them!
