The last thing Jesus told His followers to do before He ascended to heaven and left them in the world to continue the work He had begun was “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19a, NIV). Then He told them how to transform believers into genuine “disciples” [followers]. He said, “Baptizing them…and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19b…20a, NIV). So making disciples is a two-step process—“baptizing them…and teaching them.” However, we can’t just teach them whatever we choose. Jesus was very specific about the content of the teaching in the disciple-making process. He said, “Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20a, NIV). In other words, we must teach believers to obey “The Commands of Christ,” in order to transform them into authentic “disciples.” In order to do so, we must know what those commands of Christ are! So during this series of lessons, we are identifying and briefly examining these “Commands of Christ.”
