Love - Expressed in Actions, Not Merely in Words

Speaker: Kenny Burns

In this lesson we will continue exploring the eighth level of spiritual development to which Peter referred when he wrote, “For this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love” (II Peter 1:5-7, NKJV). The Greek word used by Peter that is translated “love” is “agape.” It is that “divine love” that cannot be learned, but is “poured out” into the hearts of believers who have journeyed through the first seven stages of spiritual development. Paul was describing this kind of “love” when he wrote to the believers at Rome, “The love [agape] of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5b, NKJV). This kind of “love” is the result of the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart of a believer. Paul described it as one of the “fruit of the Spirit” when he wrote, “The fruit of the Spirit is love [agape], joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23a, NIV). As we will learn in this lesson, “divine love” must be expressed in action, not merely in words. John wrote to first-century Jewish Christians, “Dear children, let us not love [agape] with words or speech but in actions and in truth” (I John 3:18, NIV). It isn’t enough to say you love someone. “Love” must be demonstrated by “actions” and those actions must be motivated by a clear understanding of “truth.”
