Psalm 22 - Awestruck by the Almighty

• Oct 29, 2023

Speaker: Kenny Burns

Psalm 22 is both poetic and prophetic. It was written in the style of beautiful Hebrew poetry and predicted many of the details of the suffering of the Savior on the cross centuries later. The title of the Psalm is similar to several other Psalms which we have already studied. However, the title of Psalm 22 adds a bit of instruction to the ‘director of music’ to lead the Temple Choir to sing the Psalm to the music of a specific tune—‘The Doe of the Morning.’ The title of the Psalm reads like this: “For the director of music. To the tune of ‘The Doe of the Morning.’ A psalm of David.” (Psalm 22 Title, NIV). No doubt, Mary and Joseph would have known the Psalm and its tune. They would have taught it to Jesus during his childhood years. Then on the cross, Jesus likely sang this Psalm—at least portions of it—to its tune. The opening line of the Psalm reads, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?...” (Psalm 22:1a, NIV). According to Matthew, Jesus recited this line on the cross. He wrote, “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?’—which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’” (Matthew 27:46, NIV). Because Psalm 22 contains 31 verses and is divided naturally into two distinct sections, last week I presented a lesson on the first division: The Suffering of the Savior (Psalm 22:1-21). Today I will present a lesson from Psalm 22 on the second division: Praise to the Faithful God of David (Psalm 22:22-31).
