How to Give Thanks
Speaker: Kenny Burns
As I was thinking about what God would want me to say to you on this Sunday before Thanksgiving Day in 2020. I reflected on all the turmoil and conflict that has devastated America during this year. 2020 will, no doubt go down in the history books as the year of crisis and conflict in America and to some extent globally. We have endured Covid-19; the accompanying collapse of the US economy; the death of George Floyd which resulted in racially motivated riots, looting, violence, injury, murder and destruction of private property in dozens of major US cities; and a presidential election that will continue to be disputed for years to come regardless of who the winner is ultimately determined to be.
In the midst of all of that, the ancient Apostle Paul says, “Give thanks in all circumstance; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (I Thessalonians 5:18, NIV). To “Give thanks in all circumstances” means: “Give thanks” when a pandemic strikes; “Give thanks” when the economy collapses; “Give thanks” when major US cities are torn apart by race riots; and “Give thanks” when the US electoral system is grossly corrupted by power-hungry politicians!
As I thought through these issues, it occurred to me how inappropriate it would be for me to insist that you “Give thanks” during this year of crisis and turmoil without explaining what the Bible says to us about “How to Give Thanks.” So that’s what this lesson is about…
