The Terrifying Judgment of Turning Away From Jesus (fbcfenton)
Speaker: Dr. John E. Greever
Introduction
There is a popular trend in many churches today to avoid talking about judgment and apostasy. But it is apparent to anyone who reads the Bible that God has no hesitation in addressing such subjects. These subjects are fundamental to the gospel, clearly stated in the biblical text, and thus, we should think rightly on them.
Before we consider this text today, let’s set the context on which this text is based:
1. The focus of the warning centers on those who reject or turn from the atoning work of Christ. This is the “sin” referenced in the text.
2. The particular application of this warning is given to those who should know better; they are those who are aware of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They may even have made some profession concerning the gospel of Jesus Christ, but now they have turned from it.
3. The judgment of God is presented to the reader on the basis of the value of Christ’s atoning work, the nature of God, and the real meaning of unbelief.
