Last week in our “tour” of the “house of Romans,” we came into the great soaring hall of Creation, which surrounds all men as a clear witness to the truth of God. Now our attention is drawn to a downward spiraling staircase, ornately decorated with man-made idols. We see men and women, who choose to disregard God from their minds and dishonor God with their lives, choosing to go this direction and calling out for us to join them. But as we approach, Paul points out the awful stench that comes up from the dark and dismal abyss at the bottom of this staircase. Each step down has the name of another thing on God’s blacklist of vices, yet the crowd not only happily heads down, they rejoice when others do so too. It is sad to see so many blinded, vain, and reprobate minds, but Paul reminds us that this is why the precious Gospel message of God’s righteousness and redemption is as important and needed as ever, as more and more of society plunges down this path.
