Series on Prayers of the Apostle Paul: 1 Thessalonians 5

• Mar 24, 2019

Speaker: Alan Lorrimer-Riley

Abstract: Paul deals with the problems the Thessalonians had regarding the second coming. The purpose of prophesy is not to confuse and cause problems, but to encourage believers to live righteous lives in the present. He gives guidance on what the Christian life should be. The mark of true Christian faith is that it changes all you do and say, it affects every area of your life. It is important to respect those that lead a Church. Paul says to rejoice always and pray continually - i.e. As natural as breathing. The Holy Spirit wants to come into your life to help you, but will never force His way in, waiting until he is asked in. Prophesies need to be tested rather than blindly accepted. Paul's prayer is 'May God Himself, the God of peace sanctify you through and through. May your whole body, soul and spirit be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the one who calls you His faithful and will do it. God is perfect without flaw. His aim for us is that we should also be completely changed to perfection. Why? Because Jesus will return and we must be ready. The key points here are verses 23 and 24. Then Paul asks to be prayed for for the same things as he also needs God's help to continue in His work.
