Series on Prayers of the Apostle Paul - 1 Thessalonians 1

• Feb 3, 2019

Speaker: Alan Lorrimer-Riley

Abstract: Thessalonica was then, as now, a very important city in the region: financial, political and religious. Paul was glad that the Chritian Church set up in Thessalonica was growing well, unlike some churches in other areas. Paul begins by looking at how the Church is with Christ and giving thanks, as we should all learn with regard to any negativity between Churches of Christ. Paul then highlights in Ch 1 the aspects of the Church in Thessalonica that pleases him. He focusses on the three important things: faith, hope and love. The bible teaches that faith enables us to see God more clearly, but is not enough as perfection only comes from above. Faith is the shield in battle. Faithful servants can be depended upon to do God's will, getting the job done, providing evidence of God's love. When close to God, His love is passed on through us. The problem with legalism is that it does not show love, so is not of God. Love makes you want to do more, both for God and for others. Hope means waiting for something not yet fulfilled. As Christians, our hope is for perfection with God. Hope does not promise a comfortable pain free life, but perfection eventually enabling endurance. Where we suffer difficulties, Pauls says that this age will end, as will the suffering.
