Acts 2:1-13 - Spirit-filled (Rod Ohmes)
Speaker: Rod Ohmes
Luke is pointing out the major shift that’s happening in Christianity: God’s presence doesn’t dwell within the walls of the tabernacle or temple any longer – it’s come to take up residence in the new temple of Jesus’ body. The Holy Spirit now rests on the people of God.
The Holy Spirit came upon the believers at Pentecost in a special way to empower them for their task of being Jesus' witnesses, starting in Jerusalem. John Stott says, “Before Christ sent the church into the world, he sent the Spirit into the church.”
Miraculously speaking another language or performing miracles are not the end purpose of being filled with the Spirit. When the Holy Spirit came and filled these believers, they immediately began to glorify God by telling of His mighty works in Jesus.
The emphasis of Pentecost is about people who are surrendering to the Spirit and who bear witness of God’s work through Jesus. The meaning of Pentecost is God equipping His church with the power of His Spirit so that He will be glorified among the nations.
