"Called to Suffer"
Speaker: Pastor Henry
[Note-Begins with children's message.]
Verse 18 of 1 Peter 2 should be remembered, for here we learn to whom Peter is speaking: “domestic/house slaves” (The ESV renders οἰκέται as “servants.”). Whether slave or free, the primary identity of a Christian is “disciple of Jesus.” By analogy, Peter’s exhortations apply to us. Peter does not say to “seek your freedom,” “demand your own rights,” or “pursue your own happiness.” Rather, Christians are called to submit to earthly authorities and suffer injustice. For, that is what Jesus did for us. When reviled, he did not revile. When suffering, he did not threaten. He bore our sins for us, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness (v.23f.).
