Godliness: Within the Grasp of Every Believer
Speaker: Kenny Burns
Although most of us have heard the word, few of us can give a quick and easy definition of “godliness.” The words “godly” and “godliness” actually appear only a few times in the New Testament. We read so little about it that we might conclude that it’s something reserved for only a select group of “super-saints”—not for the ordinary believer. But according to Peter, nothing could be further from the truth. He wrote, “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life” (II Peter 1:3a, NLT).
When Peter wrote those words he was addressing everyone who shared “the same precious faith” he and the other apostles possessed. Notice how he addressed the letter he was writing: “I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have” (II Peter 1:2b, NLT). He was addressing every believer! Therefore, “God has given [every believer] everything we need for living a godly life” (II Peter 1:3a, NLT). If you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, “godliness” is certainly within your grasp!
