Speaker: Dr. John E. Greever

Introduction, I suppose the passage before us today is one of the most difficult passages to understand and accept to the modern mind. Some have tried to change its meaning by stating that this only has reference to God"s choosing of Israel as a nation. But limiting God"s sovereign choice to a nation doesn"t solve the primary problem many have with this problem " God makes choices of His own free will. It is interesting to note that Paul answers the most commonly raised objection to God"s choosing to save people with this passage before us. Is God just and fair to choose whom He will? Is He right in doing this? Does God have the authority to do this? Evidently this issue has been a problem for people since time began. “What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! For He says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” Romans 9:14-15 NASB “So what should we say about this? Is God unfair? In no way. God said to Moses, ‘I will show kindness to anyone to whom I want to show kindness, and I will show mercy to anyone to whom I want to show mercy.” Romans 9:14-15 NCV This passage quotes Exodus 33:19 where Moses has requested to see the glory of God. God says in Exodus 33:17 that Moses has found “favor” in His sight. This inspires Moses to make the startling request to see God"s glory. But God responds and says that God is sovereign in His decision to exhibit His glory, because all things are to God"s glory. There is no deservingness in man; man can only be a vessel of mercy and compassion, not a companion of equal footing with God.
