When the 19 year old German missionay Georg Schwarz set foot at Cape Bedford, north of Cooktown in far north Queensland, he could scarcely have imagined what lay before him. He worked with the Guugu-Yimidhirr people for the next 62 years, only to be interned during WWII and the community forcibly exiled. The Hope Vale community holds an annual thanksgiving for the arrival of the gospel, on the second Sunday in September.
