Hope Fellowship Church Jan 13 – 19, 2019 ========== That Your Joy May Be Complete ========== 1 John 1:1-4 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. Joy defined: What or whom completes the joy in our lives? 1. A Greater understanding of who God is and who we are. 1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. · God is forever light and truth. 1 John 1:6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. · Where does that leave us? 1 John 1:6-7 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 2. Fellowship with God constrains us to deal with our own Heart. What does it mean to walk in darkness? 1 John 2:8-11 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. Fellowship with God Walking in the Light Heart is Exposed a. We can decide that the price of Fellowship with God is just too much. b. We can decide to walk in the Light as He is in the Light. Who is the one another? 1 John 1:8-10 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 3. Fellowship with God leads us to reject the act of denial. John 8:31-37 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." They answered him, "We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, 'You will become free'?" Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 1 John 3:19-22 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 4. An understanding of the foundation of our confidence in Christ completes our Joy.
