James: Arrogance / Grace-Reliance
James is a book of timeless wisdom for practical living. It tackles real issues and struggles, that we will face in life, like temptation, wisdom, self-control, anger, arrogance, suffering, and so much more. James challenges our character and calls us to action directed by our faith. James takes principles and makes them practical.
==========
James 4:13-17
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
James 4:12
There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
1. An arrogance that is based on what we think we know.
James 4:13
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"—
Information based arrogance is an assumption that we control the times and happenings of our lives.
How and or where have you overextended yourself?
James 4:14
yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
What is the solution to our time stress or pressure?
Hosea 6:4
What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away.
Hosea 13:3
Therefore they shall be like the morning mist or like the dew that goes early away, like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor or like smoke from a window.
Psalms 1:4
The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Isaiah 17:13
The nations roar like the roaring of many waters, but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far away, chased like chaff on the mountains before the wind and whirling dust before the storm.
2. An arrogance that is found in our approach to life.
James 4:15-16
Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
· This is more than just words.
· This is not about eliminating planning.
James is pointing us to a humble reliance on God based on the understanding that we are dependent on God for every instant of our lives.
Sin of omission
Sin of commission
3. An arrogance that exhibits itself in how we conduct our lives.
James 4:17
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
James 1:23-24
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
It is easy to say that we want to know God's will or that we recognize our dependence on His will; but to look at what God has already said about His will and doing it, that is our struggle.
