Blessed are the Unexpected

Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes, a series of blessings. But who he blesses is significant: those who need God's blessings the most. Blessed are the rejected, the forgotten, the losers. Jesus is about to give a lot of commands, but he begins by letting us know that God's blessings aren't earned, but are an unexpected gift.
