Defying all the expectations of his culture, Jesus understood that the Father had sent him not only to his own people, but to all people—an aspect of his mission that caught everyone, even his closest followers, off guard. In fact, it still does. And what does Jesus expect of us? “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am,” Jesus says in John 12, “there will my servant be also.” We are to follow Jesus in boundlessly reaching out.
